Shaped Wildness: A Wild Woman Project

10 May 2025

Using the knowledge and practice of herbal medicine as a guiding tool, this project explores contemporary women’s narratives of their own bodies. Beginning with personal experience and expanding and connect to collective memory, it investigates how both individual and social bodies are constructed and shaped—how they are restricted, reclaimed, and renamed.

Is wildness an instinct of intuition and nature? Or is it an act of resistance and liberation?

Is wildness a label born of gender discrimination? Or a call back to a primal connection with nature and ecology?

In a past where gender equality was not yet acknowledged, women carried the heavy weight of societal norms and expectations. My grandmother and mother struggled between the roles of traditional women and autonomous individuals. I too have wrestled with the tension between being taught how to be a woman and the right to claim bodily autonomy. Even after decades of feminist discourse and gender equity movements across different schools of thought, we still have to resist prejudice meanwhile search for grounding and balance amid multiple identities.

“Shaped Wildness” is not a categorisation, but an experimental inquiry into the pursuit of autonomy. Through the gathering of and having dialogue with herbs, texts, and objects, the project reconsiders the relationships between women, nature, the body and power.
